Principal Naval Architect Manuela Bucci and Professor Colin MacFarlane wrote a paper that discusses the use of MOSIS for modernising ship stability.  This met the interest of engineers and scientists at the 78th SAWE conference in Norfolk, Virginia, where the paper won the Technical Paper Special Merit award.

The paper is an excursion through the traditional methods for measuring and assessing stability of ships, where deficiencies in inclining experiments and in day to day stability assessments are identified and discussed.  It appears that the statistical approach used by MOSIS, which integrates measurements and analysis for process control, can overcome these deficiencies providing a safer and commercially optimal stability assessment.
